Gained University status
The Further and Higher Education Act gave 35 polytechnics the right to use the title of 'university' and award their own degrees. To distinguish us from the University of Sheffield, we adopted a name reflecting the local area – the constituency of Sheffield Hallam – and Sheffield Hallam University was born.
