The iconic Students' Union building, nicknamed 'the HUBs', was described by the former higher education minister Kim Howells as having the best facilities he had seen.
The building was previously occupied by the National Centre for Popular Music, which failed to attract enough visitors and closed in 2000. Before this, the Students' Union was located in the Nelson Mandela Building, built in 1978.
