Green certification for Sheffield Hallam

The University has successfully gained certification to both the ISO 14001 for its environmental management system and ISO 50001 for energy management following audits by the British Standards Institution (BSI). These internationally recognised certifications were awarded after a review of academic, research, operational and commercial activities across both of the University’s campuses and audits across the University’s entire operations.

Viki Bell, global portfolio manager for sustainability at BSI, presented the certificate to members of the University’s environmental management system review team. Viki explained, “As an organisation, Sheffield Hallam has put in place policies using the ISO 14001 framework which take into consideration the potential environmental impacts of the University.

‘Sheffield Hallam has achieved this quickly considering the size of the organisation and the breadth of initiatives across both campuses.

‘We were particularly impressed by the University’s ethos of ‘practising what you teach’ which is clearly demonstrated by the link between the academic courses offered and the way the campuses are run. It’s a very positive and proactive approach.’

Stephen Hudson, EMEA product marketing manager for sustainability at BSI who presented the ISO 50001 certificate said, ‘I’m very proud to present this award to Sheffield Hallam University. This accreditation was only published in June last year and to achieve this along with the ISO14001 accreditation is a great achievement.

‘Sheffield Hallam are exemplars in their field. The Cantor Building is an example of the innovative energy measures and sustainable sources in place at this University and I’m pleased to see the adoption of the ISO standards through securing energy sources moving forward.

‘I’d like to thank the staff involved for their hard work and dedication to meet this high standard.’

This certification acknowledges our drive to comply with regulation and legislation in the environmental field, and continually improving our performance in managing environmental impacts, including the prevention of pollution.
