Activities and support for students

We offer a number of activities, taster sessions and resources designed to give prospective students of all ages a realistic insight into what it's like to study here – and in higher education generally. We also provide support for students from a diverse range of backgrounds to ensure higher education is accessible to people with different life experiences and perspectives.

Cash Course

What? The Graduation Project website includes online profiles of our graduates. These graduates share their experiences of higher education, explaining how it helped to prepare them for their career and offering advice to those considering higher education.

Looked-after children

We have made a commitment to support young people in care who want to study at Sheffield Hallam University.

What? We work closely with our local authority partners to produce events which raise the aspirations of young people in care. This has been recognised by Buttle UK who have awarded us their quality mark for care leavers in higher education.

Support for care leavers who wish to study at Sheffield Hallam University includes

  • a non repayable bursary (eligibility criteria applies)
  • dedicated support from our care leaver coordinator
  • support in securing suitable accommodation (including 365-day accommodation)
  • a place on our Compact Scheme (eligibility criteria applies)
  • priority access to a personalised finance and welfare advisory appointment with the students’ union

Student ambassadors

We work with students at the University on many of our projects and activities in schools and colleges.

The Languages Film School

A three-day non-residential summer school for year 10 languages pupils held each July.

What? After participating in interactive languages and film workshops, students record and edit a three minute film in either French, Spanish or German. There is an awards event in September attended by teachers, parents and participants, where the finished films are screened and judged.

This summer school is designed to act as a preparation tool for AS and A level languages study and is supported by industry professionals and staff from academic departments in the University.


When? Annually in July with an awards ceremony in September

Y10 Mentoring Scheme

Our year 10 mentoring scheme aims to raise aspirations, improve attitudes towards higher education and improve motivation and self-esteem.

What? The scheme is targeted at students from groups which are underrepresented in higher education. Our undergraduate student mentors deliver a series of interactive and engaging themed group sessions, discussing a variety of topics.

Parliament Week

Parliament WeekA programme of activity for a range of ages as part of National Parliament Week.

What? A programme of activity for a range of ages as part of National Parliament Week, held in November each year. Activity is aimed at increasing understanding of the workings of Parliament and offer access to Parliamentary figures to engage young people in Politics.


When? Parliament Week 2013 runs from 15–21  November. More information regarding the activity available will be added to this site shortly. This type of activity will also be available throughout the year dependent on availability so please let us know if you are interested in exploring what we can offer at other times.


Where? Most activities are offered on campus at Sheffield Hallam during Parliament Week, but we offer ad-hoc sessions both on campus and in schools and colleges throughout the year.

If students miss out on their expected grades, we may be able to offer a place through clearing.

What? There are options for students who miss out on a place at university on results day. Clearing provides a chance for students to accept a place on an alternative course.

Compact Scheme

Exclusive events and activities for students who face barriers to their progression into higher education.

What? The Compact Scheme offers support to specific students, including looked-after children or applicants with extenuating circumstances. This support may include interview preparation workshops and special consideration during the admissions process.
