This course enables you to complete the Early Years Educator level 3 qualification which meets the Ofqual national requirements and Graduate Practitioner Competencies through a range of core and elective modules. Elective modules enable you to follow with a Health and Wellbeing pathway or an Environments for Learning pathway. Assessed placements are an integral part of each year. The Graduate Practitioner Competencies are endorsed by the Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network at level 6 and are recognised by the Department for Education.

How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
Your studies are led by a team of lecturers with extensive and varied professional experience in key services for children and families. Their backgrounds include social work, health visiting, teaching, social care and psychology. They are all involved in research, writing books and leading early years practice.

Course leaders and tutors
Work based learning is integrated throughout the course. You can gain experience in a range of settings such as as schools, pre-schools, forest schools, child minders and outreach hubs.

A number of our students go on to study a postgraduate qualification in subjects including social work, education and research. Others progress to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) to qualify as teachers.
All students gaining an Honours degree are guaranteed an interview for a Hallam PGCE course subject to terms and conditions*.
*Candidates for PGCE courses will require GCSE grade C or Grade 4 in English Language and mathematics and science, or equivalent and usually a 2.2 degree or above. Candidates will also need to successfully complete the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the DfE.
Where will I study?
You study at City Campus through a structured mix of lectures, seminars and practical sessions as well as access to digital and online resources to support your learning.
City Campus is located in the heart of Sheffield, within minutes of the train and bus stations.

Equipment and facilities
You will have access to excellent facilities and learning resources across the city campus. We also have an Early Childhood Specialist room which is equipped as an early childhood environment with both indoor and outdoor space. Depending on the pathway that you choose you may also access a local woodland environment.
On this course you work with:
- Early childhood specialist equipment
- Pebblepad and pebble pocket
This must include at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:
- BCC at A Level.
- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies.
- English Language or English Literature at grade C
- Maths at grade C
• Access - at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2 from a relevant Open College Network accredited course
• Grade B from CACHE Diploma Level 3, for example in Childcare and Education or Health and Social Care.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other skills, or equivalent.
It would support your application if you have had experience of working/supporting children in school or informal settings on a paid or voluntary basis, however this is not essential.

- involvement in disciplinary proceedings during paid or voluntary employment or education establishments
- involvement with safeguarding proceedings, social services or related organisations
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Criminal Record Check
- you will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check prior to or during the enrolment week of your course. This will be provided by the University free of charge.
- you will need to present valid identity documents (PDF) as part of the DBS application process
- if you have lived outside of the UK for more than six consecutive months in the last five years you must provide an overseas criminal record check. Further information on obtaining an overseas criminal record check.
- where your DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate contains any recorded information you must present this to the Academic Administration Team within ten working days of receipt of the certificate.
We consider other qualifications from the UCAS tariff. Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience are also considered. We welcome applications from people of any age. Please contact us for further advice.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2022/23 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
