How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BSc (Hons) Business and Digital Technology course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other computing foundation year students, then move on to the degree.
You experience and engage in a variety of activities as you progress through the course. We have designed a balanced mix of these activities to help you with the knowledge, understanding and skills we have outlined above, as you develop as a business and ICT student and enhance your employability.
You will learn through
- lectures, tutorials and seminars
- work-based learning projects, peer mentoring events and employability fairs
- group and individual coursework involving written and verbal communication activities, problem-solving activities and information-gathering activities (including desk-based or field research)
- continuous reflection on your personal and professional development
- independent study
In the foundation year, you’ll build on your existing knowledge and experience — developing useful academic, computing and IT skills in preparation for undergraduate study. You’ll benefit from innovative course content that allows you to access and use cutting-edge technology. Throughout, you’ll reflect on your progress, and build valuable communication and interpersonal skills.
Applied learning
Work placements
You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your third and fourth years. We highly recommend a placement year as it helps your personal and professional development through real-world experience, and enhances your career prospects on graduation. Be it a local, national or international industrial placement, you get personal and pastoral support from your allocated tutor during your placement year.
Previous students have taken placements with various organisations ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large multinational corporations including IBM, BMW, Boeing, DHL, Intel, Xerox, Bentley and Texas Instruments.
