Discover everything you need to know about the building surveying profession – including building pathology, construction technology, building conservation, project management and design. You’ll graduate with the qualifications and experience that will enable you to progress onto the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Assessment of Professional Competence – where you can become Chartered.
We also offer a degree apprenticeship version of this course, where you study alongside 30+ hours of employment per week.

How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
You will be taught by a well-established teaching team with comprehensive professional practice and applied research experience coupled with active participation within RICS and other professional bodies. You will cement theoretical concepts by applying them to real life scenarios.
You’ll be part of Sheffield Hallam’s ambitious developments at the heart of the city — and watch the progress unfold.
Throughout the course, you’ll work with industry figures on a range of exciting real-world projects, and you’ll usually undertake a placement year in a building surveying practice.
The course includes a UK residential field trip in the first year. You also have the opportunity to join relevant field trips to cities such as Edinburgh, and attend a project-based visit to a major European city.

Applied learning
Work placements
In your third year you’ll have the chance to put your professional skills to work – with a placement at a variety of employers such as major national or regional surveying practices, local authorities, housing associations or loss adjusters.
Your placement can contribute up to 200 days towards the professional experience requirement for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Assessment of Professional Competence. During your placement, you can also be registered for an Applied Professional Diploma (APDip), a further qualification on top of your degree.
Live projects
We invite a range of industry guests to work with you on consultancy, simulations and other projects – posing real problems for you to solve.
We have excellent links with local professional and voluntary groups with large property portfolios. They provide various building stock for case studies and project work, which focus on actual buildings with real clients. You’ll inspect real-life building assets at the university, including a Georgian terraced house which has been adapted into an interactive teaching space. You’ll also get to observe and take part in Sheffield Hallam’s £200 million estate development – which will transform the gateway to the city from the train station.
Field trips
On regional, national and international field trips you’ll apply your learning in diverse environments. These include a UK residential field trip in the first year, opportunities to join field trips to cities such as Edinburgh, and a project-based visit to a major European city.
Networking opportunities
Through networking events and guest lectures by practitioners, you’ll see how your learning relates to the world of building surveying. You’ll also engage with many of our graduates as industry guests and at our annual careers day – hearing how they’re making an impact through their successful careers in the world of building surveying.

All students
UCAS points

This must include at least 64 points from two A levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:
- BBC at A Level.
- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies.

GCSE
- English Language or English Literature at grade C or 4
- Mathematics at grade C or 4
We may accept GCSE equivalents.
• Access - at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2 from a relevant Open College Network accredited course
• Foundation degree - advanced entry - for direct entry to year two you must have a Foundation degree in a related subject, with an average score of 60% across the highest level modules.
• Advanced entry - for direct entry to year two you would normally have a minimum of an of an overall / average Merit across all units in a construction related HND/HNC, not including key or common skills. Compensation for a pass in one unit with a distinction in another unit is permitted.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.
We consider other qualifications from the UCAS tariff. Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience are also considered. We welcome applications from people of any age. Please contact us for further advice.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2022/23 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
