The world we live in today is profoundly dependent on the talents of electronic and electrical engineers. Creating, designing and managing the systems that keep things running is vital in our society – from the generation of heat, light and power to the ease and speed of communication that we’ve come to expect. On this course you’ll study topics including electronic design, communications, software engineering, computer modelling, microelectronics, power generation and distribution, electrical machines, signal processing, renewable energy systems, smart building systems and instrumentation.

How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other engineering, maths and physics foundation year students, then move on to the degree.
You’ll study the fundamentals of engineering science, applicable mathematics, and practical and project skills as well as developing scientific and analytical skills by studying electrical energy systems, machines, control engineering and electronic systems design. In the final year, specialist options enable you to undertake real-life inquiry, investigation, and discovery through a specific research topic, project or consultancy – making an original contribution to your discipline or related industry requirements.

In the foundation year, you’ll study the fundamental maths, science and engineering principles that you’ll need at undergraduate level, and apply them to a range of different topics. You’ll learn through many of the same techniques used on the degree course, and familiarise yourself with Sheffield Hallam and its facilities — ensuring that you’re ready to hit the ground running.

Work placements
You’ll develop employment attributes through work experience and research. The course offers you the chance to undertake an optional placement in Year 3 – helping you to build on the knowledge and skills developed on the course. Over 12 months you’ll be able to enhance your employability and develop your skills as an individual.
We’ll be on hand to support you in applying for and finding suitable placement opportunities. We’re in regular contact with local and national companies – and we can help you with interview techniques and preparing your CV. Previous students have spent their placement year at companies including Siemens, Cummins, Network Rail, Caterpillar, Cetix, Power Control, Servelec Group, Abaco Systems, ARM, BG Solutions, Chesterfield and Heraeus Electro-Nite (UK).

We have excellent teaching facilities, including an impressive range of professionally-equipped laboratories for teaching, projects and research.
You will work within dedicated laboratories for
- embedded systems – hardware and software facilities for advanced ARM, FPGA, microcontroller development and Arduino
- electronics and communications – modern digital oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies and spectrum analysers
- electrical power – modern industrial AC and DC motors and drives, electric vehicle technology, renewable energy generation technology (small wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels and fuel cell), as well as power electronics rigs for power converters and inverters design
- control systems – PLCs, pneumatic and hydraulic kits with software for monitoring and control (SCADA) via Labview

All students
UCAS points

This must include at least 32 points from one A level or equivalent BTEC qualifications. For example:
- CDD at A Level.
- MMP in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include a maximum of one AS level, EPQ and general studies

- English Language at grade C or 4

- Science at grade C or 4
• Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.
We may also accept you, if you have no formal qualifications but can show evidence of ability and a genuine commitment to studying the subject.
Some applicants may be invited to attend an informal interview with the course leader to ensure that the programme is suitable for themselves and their aspirations.
UK students may be able to claim financial support for the course.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 or over at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2022/23 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
† If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
