Your lecturer's view
You are supported by online learning resources and high quality laboratories and learning spaces. A structured programme of study provides you with the knowledge and skills to undertake tasks of increasing complexity. You demonstrate your learning through a range of assessment tasks matched to the learning taking place, such as technical report writing, posters, presentations, in-class assessments, multiple-choice questions and examinations.

You will be encouraged to apply for placement opportunities during your studies and will be supported in arranging a year-long work placement in between your second and third years by our dedicated Placements and Employability Team.This provides you with real-world experience to prepare you for your future engineering career. Previous students have taken industrial placements at companies such as McLaren Racing Limited, Bosch Thermotechnology, Rolls-Royce, BMW, EDF Energy, and Airbus UK .
You take part in the Engineers without Border's Engineering for People Design Challenge. This prepares you to become a globally responsible engineer by working on real world issues including water supply, energy, and transport.
In the final year you undertake a major individual project. This adds a unique appeal to your degree qualification, and reflects your own interests. In many cases students returning from an industrial placement continue their working relationship with their employer by undertaking a work-based project.
You can get involved with a number of student engineering societies. We also encourage you to become a member of a professional body, such as the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. The IMechE can help with career planning, building of engineering knowledge, and have a wealth of resources including scholarships and awards.
Throughout the course you are encouraged to take part in international engineering competitions, such as Europe's most established education engineering competition – IMechE Formula Student – and the IMechE Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge. Both competitions are backed by industry and see you competing against teams from all over the world.
Each year our strongest team from The Engineering for People Design Challenge goes on to compete in the Engineers without Borders national final. In 2016 our students won the whole competition and a two-week trip to Mexico City.
We deliver graduate and placement careers fairs with employers who provide opportunities for placements and final year students. Employers also deliver skills based sessions to support students in improving their employability.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for the purposes of partially meeting the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Students will need to complete an approved format of further learning pursuant to the requirements of UK-SPEC.
This course automatically meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
Student success story
MEng Mechanical Engineering student Jodie Howlett was named one of the UK’s top 50 women under 35 in engineering by the Daily Telegraph in June 2017. Jodie spent the third year of her course on placement at Rolls-Royce, helping the company develop more powerful and efficient jet engines for passenger planes. In 2019, Jodie will take part in the Space Studies Program at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.

You have access to a wide range of hardware and equipment, including
- computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks
- analysis software such as Fluent, Abacus and Matlab

As part of SHU Racing you can design and build a car, then race against other universities at Silverstone. Team Principal Max Vollans talks about what's involved.
This must include at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (to include mathematics and scientific subjects). For example:
- BBC at A Level including relevant subjects.
- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma ina relevant subject.
- A combination of qualifications which must include relevant subjects and may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies
- English Language at grade C or 4
- Maths at grade C or 4
• Foundation - pass from the Extended Degree Programme Engineering and Mathematics, dependent on academic performance
• Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
We will make an offer to all applicants likely to achieve or better these entry requirements.
We welcome applications from people of any age. We may be flexible in our normal offer if you can show a commitment to succeed and have the relevant skills and experience. This must show that you will benefit from and finish the course successfully.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2021/22 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
