On this course, you'll study education in detail, and have the chance to specialise and gain a qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). while engaging in debates and improving your communication skills. All assessment is coursework based.
You may also be able to work or study abroad with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus+ programme (until 2023) or the Turing Scheme.
Applied learning
Work placements
You undertake placements in different workplaces each year, such as schools, voluntary groups or other informal educational organisations. This enables you to explore a range of potential employment opportunities during the course and gives you substantial real-world experience to prepare for your future career.
Our partnership team help you find the right placement for you. You will be in a placement setting two days per week that usually lasts up to 8 weeks during a semester on each year of the course.
Live projects
The course works with a number of educational organisations to set 'live projects' where students work collaboratively to share their knowledge with local communities. Recently our students have worked with Create Sheffield (Sheffield Cultural Education Partnership) and Sheffield Theatres Trust.
Networking opportunities
You will meet and work with a range of educational professionals and organisations, on placement and in the classroom. Our Careers and Employability team and your tutors will also introduce you to relevant research and professional networks.
Developing attributes such as curiosity, independent-thinking and integrity, alongside skills such as reflection, evaluation and digital literacy opens doors to a wide range of post-degree possibilities.
At each level of the course, you will be supported to reflect on the experience you are gaining and will develop action plans to scaffold your ongoing professional journey.

A sizeable proportion of our Education graduates train as teachers by completing a one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students gaining an Honours degree are guaranteed an interview for a Hallam PGCE course subject to terms and conditions*.
*Candidates for PGCE courses will require GCSE grade C or Grade 4 in English Language and mathematics and science, or equivalent and usually a 2.2 degree or above. Candidates will also need to successfully complete the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the DfE.

All students
UCAS points
- 104
This must include at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:
- BCC at A Level.
- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies.

GCSE
- English Language or English Literature at grade C or 4
- Maths at grade C or 4
We may accept GCSE equivalents.
• Access - at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2 from a relevant Open College Network accredited course
• Grade B from CACHE Diploma Level 3 in Child Care and Education.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other skills, or equivalent.
Suitability Declaration
You must fully declare the following information on the application form during the admissions process:

- involvement in disciplinary proceedings during paid or voluntary employment or education establishments
- involvement with safeguarding proceedings, social services or related organisations
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Criminal Record Check
- you will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check prior to or during the enrolment week of your course. This will be provided by the University free of charge.
- you will need to present valid identity documents (PDF) as part of the DBS application process
- if you have lived outside of the UK for more than six consecutive months in the last five years you must provide an overseas criminal record check. Further information on obtaining an overseas criminal record check.
- where your DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate contains any recorded information you must present this to the Academic Administration Team within ten working days of receipt of the certificate.

Fees and funding
Home students
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2022/23 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
† If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
