"My one word to describe studying at Sheffield Hallam would be enriching.
I studied my undergraduate degree in Business and ICT at SHU which included a one-year placement with the Admissions and UK Recruitment team at Hallam. My placement helped me to build a personal and professional development where I was involved in real-world applications. The skills I gained, I was able to transfer towards my first graduate job as an IT Technician for a secondary school in Sheffield. I, not only, supported staff and students going through regular IT related incidents but took the initiative to be involved in multiple projects building strong working relationships with my colleagues.
Returning to SHU as a postgraduate student – my tutors are passionate and enthusiastic to teach computing and make me excited to learn outside of class. They explain complex concepts in an easy to understand manner which is reinforced during lab sessions. This has made a huge difference to my learning experience; before starting my MSc, I did not know how to code, but by doing exercises and adopting a hands-on approach learning, I now feel confident with my programming. Secondly, making appointments with my adviser at the Careers Service continues to improve my techniques in writing CVs and cover letters. The 1:1 session help me express my thoughts so that I can talk about myself in a professional manner. Third, I am currently involved in SHU’s Reading Society and am volunteering, in a team of three, to help primary school children develop their confidence in reading. Both experiences are providing me with excellent opportunities to network with peers from different levels at University and improve my confidence."
