Our teacher training is 'Outstanding'

All those involved in the partnership are ambitious in their drive to provide high-quality teacher training.

NQTs and former trainees are highly professional, reflective practitioners who are held in high regard by their employing schools, colleges and settings.

Ofsted report, November 2017

The Sheffield Institute of Education (SIoE) has received the first ever 'Outstanding' rating from Ofsted for early years' teacher training - alongside an 'Outstanding' rating for our primary teacher training.

We were inspected across four areas of teacher training provision across our Initial Teach Education (ITE) Partnership - receiving an 'Outstanding' grade for early years teacher status, 'Outstanding' for our primary teacher training provision, and achieved 'Good' grades for our secondary and further education provision.

The courses were scrutinised on the basis of overall effectiveness, outcomes for trainees, quality of training, leadership and management, To date, no other provider of early years teacher status has received an 'Outstanding' grade.

The report praised the quality and level of knowledge of the trainees upon completion of their studies:

"Trainees, NQTs and former trainees are overwhelmingly positive about the support and training provided by university tutors. This aspect of the partnership’s work is of consistently high quality. Training to develop trainees’ knowledge and expertise relevant to their subject or phase is very effective."

As a provider of more than 1,000 qualified teachers each year to the local region across all age groups, the Ofsted report also praised our commitment to meeting teacher recruitment needs, saying:

"There is a clear vision and unrelenting commitment to meeting the region’s teacher recruitment needs…Many NQTs and former trainees gain employment in settings that are in challenging socioeconomic circumstances."

A team of 10 of Her Majesty’s Inspectors and six Ofsted Inspectors conducted a series of lesson inspections and interviews across May and October in 66 of our early years, school and college partners.
