Leading and sustaining high quality collaborative classroom-based research

Lesson Study is a Japanese model of teacher-led research in which teachers work together to target identified areas for development in their students’ learning. Using existing evidence, participants collaboratively research, plan, teach and observe a series of lessons, using ongoing discussion, reflection and expert input to track and refine their interventions.

In 2016, Sheffield Institute of Education (SIoE) partnered with the Teacher Development Trust (TDT) to design and pilot a professional recognition status in order to capture and enhance teacher professional learning as they implemented and led Lesson Study in their schools and across their networks. This recognition is granted and quality assured by TDT and SIoE and is aligned with the principles of the new English Standards for Teachers’ Professional Development. The pilot was successful and garnered very positive feedback from participants.

The current project extends and rolls out the programme into 2018-2019, with a renewed focus on leading collaborative research and classroom enquiry and critically evaluating a range of professional and research evidence on international models and adaptations of Japanese Lesson Study.
