'Around the Toilet' workshop at Sheffield Festival of Social Science

Around the Toilet uses the arts to ask what makes a safe accessible toilet space. The ESRC festival was an opportunity to extend these conversations to children in a school setting as well as a wider public audience.

This one-day workshop took the significant findings into school. We utilised the skills of an artist, Nicky Ward, to engage children as social scientists in sharing their own 'toilet stories' through the arts, including shadow puppetry and animation. The stories shared are the basis of comics created by Nicky. The comics were launched during the festival, along with a postcard series, enabling a wider public audience to engage with the politics of what at first seems a mundane space and to share their own toilet stories.
