Industry links and employability
Our courses are geared towards producing employable professionals within the vibrant national and international creative media industry. Our relationships with key partners have enabled us to develop a range of collaborative projects and initiatives that students can use to build a portfolio of experience and demonstrate their industry-specific skills to employers.
Undergraduate students are assisted in arranging a year-long placement year between their second and third years. This provides a real-world experience to prepare them for their future career. Students have undertaken work placements at
- Eurosport Television Ltd
- Walt Disney
- Intel Corporation UK
- Purple PR
- Freemantle Media
- Entice Communications
Regular graduate talks and industry events are held on campus for our students to network with professionals from across the creative media sector.
Every year we host SHU Pathways, an industry day where our students attend talks and workshops run by top professionals and organisations. Previous speakers have included Ian Livingstone from Sumo Digital, Fiona Hanlon from BBC Radio 1, presenter Adrian Chiles and Lee Jury from Disney, along with representatives from Sheffield Doc/Fest, ITV News and Warp Films.
Many modules on our degrees make use of the Venture Matrix, a University service which sources clients for live projects and provides our students with experience of working within a specialist industry. Our students have
- helped produce programmes for Radio 5 Live
- worked at BBC Radio Sheffield
- run the website for Doncaster Rovers
- worked as editorial assistants for the Independent, Vogue and Gay Times
- written for the Huffington Post and Buzzfeed
- developed animation for children's author Christina Gabbitas
- created films for Sheffield Council
- volunteered at Sheffield Doc/Fest
Our students have round-the-clock access to state-of-the-art facilities including new TV and Radio studios, Animation studios and software, a purpose-built cinema and two fully equipped professional film studios.
At the end of their final year, students are given the opportunity to showcase their work to industry professionals and the general public in our annual degree show. This provides valuable networking opportunities with VIPs from the creative industries.
