Director - NHS Employers
Dean Royles has been a highly regarded, leading figure in Human Resources (HR) within the NHS for nearly two decades. He provides strategic HR advice and leadership development to boards and organisations. Prior to this he was Executive Director of HR and OD at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country with over 18000 staff. His previous roles include; Chief Executive for NHS Employers and Director of Workforce and Education at NHS North West; director of HR and communications at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and a Senior Civil Servant for the NHS in England at the Department of Health.
Dean was the first HR Director at East Midlands Ambulance Service following its creation in 1999. He has also worked at an acute hospital and in a community and mental health trust having started his HR career in industrial relations in a local authority.
Dean has an MSc in Human Resources from Sheffield Hallam University and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bradford. He is also a Visiting Fellow at Newcastle Business School, former Chair of the Board of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a chartered companion for the same organisation.
He is the President of the Health People Managers Association (HPMA), a regular conference speaker, published in a number of journals, on the editorial board of HRMJ, and provides expert opinion in the national media. He was voted HR's Most Influential Practitioner in 2012, 2013 and 2014. His book, with Oxford University Press on Human Resource Management was published in February 2018.
Dean is married with four children and lives in Sheffield.
