EMES International Research Network

The Business School's social enterprise research community, working closely with researchers in the University's Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR), led Sheffield Hallam's successful application to become an institutional member of EMES – a network of university researchers on social enterprise.

EMES give international recognition to universities with 10 or more active researchers producing high quality social enterprise/third sector research, particularly where the researchers support field development though doctoral research programmes. EMES have given recognition to five researchers in Sheffield Business School who are forming the FairShares Institute for Cooperative Social Entrepreneurship (FSI) as well as five in the University's Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research. A growing contribution is assured by 12 new doctoral studies (ten in the Business School) that add to knowledge on

  • responsible leadership
  • for-purpose accounting
  • performance and reward in employee-owned businesses
  • reward management in digital co-operatives
  • the performance of democracy in worker co-operatives
  • sustainable development in worker co-operatives
  • skills development for social enterprise education
  • social entrepreneurial choices on legal structures
  • pro-social decision-making in crowdfunding
  • third-public sector relationships
  • third-public sector funding and marketisation
  • actors and institutional structures in public service innovation
