The field of food and nutrition has been a major educational and research specialism at Sheffield Hallam University for several decades. Real-life learning
We have strong links with industry. Our partners are manufacturers, retailers and charities, including leading brands Morrisons and M&S. We work with them to jointly develop courses, offer guest lectures, placements and live briefs for students to work on as consultancy projects. We embed as many real-life opportunities into our courses as possible, right down to the way we assess your work. As examples, our food students work on new product development live briefs offered by our industrial partners and our nutrition students work in collaboration with local schools to improve pupils' nutrition.
Our expertise
Our staff come from diverse backgrounds ranging from managerial and technical roles in the food industry and food retailers to the public health sector. Our teaching practice is informed by this wide range of specialist knowledge and experience. Our lecturers are also research-active and operate at the forefront of industry thinking, with particular interests in appetite, nutrition for sport, nutrition and public health, food marketing, consumer research and sensory studies, as well as food safety management.
