Training and Continuing Development Programme for Members of the Board of Governors

Training and Continuing Development Programme for Members of the Board of Governors

The introduction of a structured induction and continuing development programme for members of the Board of Governors was endorsed by the Board in April 2000. Governors' development is structured under the following four headings

  • statutory legal and financial framework
  • employment framework and responsibilities
  • understanding the University
  • understanding the Higher Education sector

The development programme has three levels

  • broad and general induction for all new Governors
  • additional deeper training for those who become chairs of committees of the Board of Governors or who assume other specific responsibilities on behalf of the Board
  • a continuing development element for existing Governors

The programme places early emphasis on the corporate governance responsibilities of Governors and commences with a mandatory induction session scheduled to take place before Governors attend their first meeting. The programme has two aims

  • to enable Governors to undertake their role and responsibilities, which are linked to the principles of public life as expressed by the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life
  • to increase Governors knowledge and understanding of the University and the higher education sector
