What we do

Heart of the Region graphic

Not only do our academics pass on their knowledge and expertise to our students, they're also leading life-changing research and supporting our region. In recent years, our researchers have helped improve teacher training on mental health issues, designed a bra for people undergoing radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer and worked with local SMEs to develop their businesses.

We are proud to serve our community. But we want to know what you think. So, here's a little of what we've been up to, then it's over to you.

Building stronger communities

We are committed to helping build stronger communities, and actively contribute to the creation of a more equal, fair and safe society.

As part of our outreach programme, we've talked to more than 60,000 local children and young people, from over 350 schools and colleges in recent years, holding various activities to explain more about further and higher education and helping develop crucial life skills.

We also train over 800 teachers a year. Chances are, the teachers in your local schools, trained at Sheffield Hallam..

Enabling healthier lives

From the number of nurses, midwives and physiotherapists we train for the local region, to our ground-breaking research, we are a leader in supporting healthier lives.

We educate more new NHS staff each year than any other provider in England. Many of our students take local placements and remain in the area, playing a key role in our local hospitals and surgeries.

Our researchers are also helping people in the region to lead healthier lives, through our world-leading Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre.

How we're enabling healthier lives in Sheffield and beyond

Driving future economies

By improving productivity, narrowing skills gaps and supporting business through innovation and enterprise, we are a major driver of the Sheffield economy.

We employ 5,000 staff, support more than 9,000 local jobs, and add an extra £424mllion to the Sheffield City Region economy every year. We also support the 40,000-strong local SME sector to grow through specialist support.

We're also launching two new world-class research centres in Attercliffe, helping to regenerate a part of Sheffield and supporting the wider community.
