Honorary Doctorate - 1994
Born and bred in Sheffield, Joe has built an international reputation as a singer and has been called the 'world's greatest blue's singer'. He made a well publicised recovery from drug dependency and now seeks to educate against the dangers of drugs. He has retained his links with Sheffield, returning for concerts and charity work.
Joe's award coincides with the continued expansion of Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter, (including the establishment of the University's Northern Media School), and plans for the establishment of the National Centre for Popular Music.
