Honorary Doctorate - 2008

John Tams, described by Mojo as 'one of the ultimate British songwriters', has enjoyed a career spanning four decades in every performance medium, making more than 50 albums as either singer, musician or producer.

A member of the Albion Band and Home Service, he has a long association with the National Theatre as actor and musical director. He has also acted in and provided the music for a number of TV and film productions, most famously as Rifleman Daniel Hagman alongside Sean Bean in the Sharpe television series.

He is a five times winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including a hat-trick of accolades in 2006 when he walked away with awards for Folk Singer of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Traditional Song.

As Executive Musical Director of the 2006 Radio Ballads he collected the coveted Sony Academy Gold Award for 'The Song of Steel ' a music documentary set in the Lower Don Valley. He was an Associate Director of the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and is presently a consultant at the National Theatre.
