Honorary Doctorate - 1993
Born and raised in Featherstone, the daughter of a colliery miner and only girl of a family of five, three of her brothers played professional Rugby League with Wakefield Trinity; Leeds and Great Britain, Kath was destined to be involved with sport and Rugby League.
After leaving the local grammar school, Kath attended teacher training college, but only for a short time. Teaching was not for her so she earned a living as a tic-tac on the racecourse and later joined her brothers sweet wholesale business.
Her marriage to Gary Hetherington in 1973 saw the couple move to live at York and it was here where she embarked on a sales career with Everest Double Glazing, quickly becoming their best selling women.
In 1984 Gary and Kath established their own Rugby League Club – the Sheffield Eagles and nurtured it for the next 12 years. Kath was to become the games first female member of the RL Council after 100 years and in 1985 the first Woman President. She has been Chairperson of Super League giants, Hull FC for the past nine years and is recognised as a leading administration and leader in the game.
A mother of three, a lifelong hockey player and now keen golfer, Kath has enjoyed an involvement with sport at all levels.
