Honorary Doctorate - 2010
As a former Chair of the Board of Governors, Nicholas Jeffrey has given distinguished service to Sheffield Hallam University over a number of years.
When first invited to become a Governor in 1996 he brought his considerable financial expertise and a strategic approach to look closely at the purpose of the institution and lay foundations for its future financial success.
Having already successfully grown the furniture retailer Cantors, from 30 shops to 300 with a turnover of £300 million from the late 1960s onwards, Nicholas turned his interest to solving the problems of several small companies. Mountain Warehouse and Coffee Republic were among the high street names to benefit from his management and financial advice.
Nicholas went on to build a successful track record in the re-organisation and strategic development of many public and private companies, as well as helping to regenerate Sheffield by attracting investment to develop offices, factories and warehouses.
When he joined the Board at Sheffield Hallam University tough decisions had to be made such as the rationalisation of five campuses and shrewd and strategic investment in estates, facilities and opportunities for students.
He was reappointed to the Governors in 2000 then became Chair in 2004. His commercial experience and strategic methods helped create a solid foundation for academic excellence.
This year Nicholas took on the Chairmanship of another great city institution, the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. His aim is to help ensure a robust financial future for the Children’s Hospital by talking to the people who work there, assessing situations and finding solutions through a careful strategic approach.
