Professor Andrew Motion - Poet Laureate
Honorary Doctorate - 2002
Acclaimed poet, novelist, academic and biographer, Andrew Motion was appointed Poet Laureate in 1999.
As the UK's official royal poet he has marked special state events with a poem, and promotes poetry's role in peoples every day lives. His verse has evoked events and causes of more personal public concern, such as the Paddington rail disaster and the charity Childline.
He has said 'I can think of no higher ambition for my work than that it might be a comfort to people in moments of extremity. I have tried to write poems that address the big emotions in life."
