Sarwar Khan Awan
Honorary Doctorate - 2007
Sarwar Khan Awan was born in the North West frontier region of Pakistan and came to live in Sheffield in 1957, where he married and had five children. He has given a huge amount of his time and energy working for community integration and cohesion since his arrival in the city 47 years ago.
Since the time of his arrival in England, he has engaged in unpaid community and community relations work, providing long term and critical ethnic minority liaison and translation services to the police, the courts, social security, health, immigration, housing and Local Authority bodies.
Following the tragic events of 11 September 2001, the allied invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent events over the following years, Sarwar has played an important role in supporting police and local authority communication with the Muslim and minority communities of Sheffield and encouraging key members to attend meetings at police headquarters to discuss concerns and contingency arrangements.
