Steve Cram is widely acknowledged as one of the most successful middle distance athletes of all time, breaking world records at 1500m, 2000m and a mile within 19 days in 1985. His achievements included six Commonwealth, European and World Championships and a silver medal at the Olympics.
Since retiring he has been actively involved in promoting and developing sport, working as a commentator and a member of many of UK sport's key bodies including the British Olympic Committee, the English Sports Council, the Lottery Awards Panel for Sport and the English Institute of Sport, of which he became chairman in 2000.
He has strongly supported sport development in the region and in October 2000 officially opened the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science at Sheffield Hallam University.
