The Right Reverend John (Jack) Nicholls, Lord Bishop of Sheffield

Professor Lisa Jardine has enjoyed phenomenal success as a scholar, historian, writer, critic, and broadcaster.

Always known as 'Jack', the Bishop of Sheffield was educated at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, Rossendale and King's College, London, where he graduated in 1966, before moving on to St Boniface College, Warminster.

For the last 40 years Bishop Jack's ministry has alternated between Lancashire and Yorkshire. He was Curate of St Clement with St Cyprian Ordsall in Salford from 1967-69 and All Saints and Martyrs Langley in Manchester between 1969-72, serving as Vicar there from 1972-78.

Jack then served as Director of Pastoral Theology at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield before returning to Manchester as a Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral from 1983-90. He was also Honorary Chaplain to Chetham School of Music. He served as Bishop of Lancaster from 1989 before being appointed Bishop of Sheffield in June 1997.

Bishop Jack is married to Judith and they have two sons, Antony and Michael, and two daughters, Rachel and Clare. He has seven grandchildren.
