Zahid Hamid

Honorary Doctorate - 2006

Pakistan-born Zahid Hamid, who was educated in Sheffield after arriving there in 1962, has worked to improve community relations across South Yorkshire for 30 years.

Up until March 2006, Zahid was chief executive of the Black Community Forum Ltd, which was formed in 1991 to encourage unity and integration of the city's black and ethnic minority communities. He led the Black CARD (Community Agency for Regeneration and Development) Agency, which was set up by the Forum to work on economic regeneration initiatives for the development of Sheffield's black communities.

A key element of his commitment to the life of Sheffield has been as an active volunteer for more than 25 years with the Samaritans, school governing bodies, and other public organisations such as the Learning and Skills Council of South Yorkshire and Sheffield First for Inclusion.
