  • About

Professor Jimenez is Professor of Exercise Science & Health at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) of Sheffield Hallam University (0.25FTE) and Chief Research & Innovation Officer at Ingesport (0.75FTE), leading the GO fit LAB. GO fit LAB is a disruptive Innovation Research Hub, including a Research LAB at Madrid within GO fit Vallehermoso centre, the biggest leisure centre in Europe. The Unit works with a pool of Universities led by a Strategic Partnership with AWRC of Sheffield Hallam University (UK) and Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Spain). The project expands from Applied Research to the areas of Scoping, Innovation & Product Development, Knowledge Transfer, Networks and Partnerships, and Training & Education. We aim to provide solid evidences at scale and sustainable best practices supporting Active Living and Sports Participation for a current cohort of GO fit leisure centres members of more than quarter of million people in Spain and Portugal. Our current Research Agenda and projects includes projects directly managed and developed by ourselves in the LAB (mainly using PhD students fully funded by the company), projects commissioned to external partners (usually Universities in UK and Spain, where we look for specific expertise and/or capacity) and proof-of-concept preliminary pilots/trials (in partnership with R+D spin-offs, SMEs, or strong industry suppliers).

Born in Madrid (Spain) in 1970, Alfonso completed a Bachelor degree in Sports & Exercise Science/Physical Education (Polytechnic University of Madrid, INEF), a postgraduate Certificate in Education (University Complutense of Madrid), a PhD in Physiology (University of Leon, Spain), and a postdoctoral training at Arizona State University (Exercise & Wellness Department), supported by a competitive grant from the Spain's Ministry of Education (Jose Castillejo Programme). At the same time, he holds different professional accreditations and certifications, as CSCS and NSCA-CPT (both Recertified with Distinction 2006-2011), and a High-Level Swimming Coach Certification (Royal Spanish Swimming Federation). Regarding his leadership

development he achieved Fellowship status from the Leadership Foundation of Higher Education in 2013 (becoming the first non-British Fellow of the Foundation).

His personal focus is a long-standing and uncompromising vision to get more people, more active, more often. Alfonso is fully committed to improving people’s health through promoting an active lifestyle, integrating physical activity, exercise and sports participation. During his career, he has tried to achieve this by facilitating big impact partnerships, championing innovation, providing high quality evidences, campaigning, and supporting research from others and sharing insights.

Previous appointments include: Professor and Executive Director of the Research Centre in Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences at Coventry University (UK); Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Heath, Exercise and Sport Sciences at European University of Madrid (Spain); Professor, Deputy Dean and Head of School of Sport & Exercise Sciences at Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia); Professor and Head of the Centre for Sport Sciences and Human Performance at the University of Greenwich (London, UK); and Chairman of the Standards Council at EuropeActive, former European Health & Fitness Association (Brussels, Belgium).

Professor Jimenez received an Honorary Membership from EuropeActive (former European Health & Fitness Association) for his service as Chairman of the Standards Council from 2009 to 2012, and a Professorial Merit Award for outstanding contribution at Greenwich in 2011. His research interests focus in the areas of health and fitness, clinical exercise, active living and worksite health promotion, having led and managed as PI more than 30 competitive research and consultancy projects with a total funding allocation exceeding £2 million. As a result of this extensive professional and consultancy background, Alfonso has offered more than 200 seminars, conferences and lectures in 23 different countries.
