Summary

Joint Science and Year 1 Module Leader for PGDE Leadership in Learning (Teach First), and Physics Module Leader for first year BSc Science with Education and QTS course

About

I worked for many years in a variety of teaching and leadership roles in secondary schools throughout Yorkshire. I then worked as a science consultant for a large local authority supporting all science leaders, before moving to work at the National Science Learning Centre in York. At the National Science Learning Centre I led a team of twenty staff who developed and delivered a broad range of flexible academic and professional development experiences across the UK, for qualified science educators from primary through to FE. During this time I also worked as a link tutor on the Science PGCE for the University of Leeds. My main science specialism is physics.

Other activities

As well as working for the University I also run my own education consultancy business, Formative Education Ltd. I have been writing and facilitating hands-on and evidenced informed Continuing Professional Development for schools, teachers and other organisations all across the UK and abroad since 2002. This has involved working with educators from primary through to HE, and running whole school, department and individual support in and across schools; as well as providing face-to-face and online CPD experiences. My fields of expertise are formative assessment, leadership, science and continuing professional development. I completed a PhD looking at the characteristics of oral teacher feedback that move forward student learning in a science classroom.
