Claire L Parkin
Student Experience Manager
Summary
Following three years in private industry I started work at Sheffield Hallam, as a PA to the Director of Sheffield Business School and then moved into administration to support the Student Support Manager in leading the Student Services team in 1998.
About
My early days in Student Services coincided with the movement of many "administrative" activities from academics to professional services staff. It was a challenging time working with the academics to embed new ways of working but I learnt a lot about negotiation, compromise and resilience. In 2001 I was given the responsibility of taking forward the administration of the School's Invitation Days, where applicants came in to find out about being a student. The model I developed grew following the merger of two schools into a Faculty, and I was proud to lead a team of administrators to innovate these activities into what are now a key part of recruitment events across the University.
For the past 12 years I have juggled my busy working life as a Student Experience Manager with my "other" job as Mum to three boys. My current role gave me the opportunity to lead the Programme Leaders into developing a strategic framework for our Induction offer to undergraduate and postgraduate students. This has been developed for students both within Hallam and abroad. Whilst this is my cross college responsibility, I have oversight of the student experience for students in the Department of Finance and work with the Head of Department and the management team to ensure resources and activities meet the needs of our students.
