Craig Haslingden BA (Hons) PGCE

Lecturer in physical education, sport and health

Summary

I joined the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity in January 2018 arriving from a nineteen year teaching career in mainly secondary education with subject specialisms in physical education and geography. A proportion of this time was spent at both middle management and senior leadership levels.

About

In my role as lead practitioner for teaching and learning at a highly acclaimed local secondary school I led a number of initiatives that achieved both regional and national awards. Action research projects and significant contribution towards whole school CPD has created a meaningful and robust impact on student outcomes and staff development.

Experience within physical education has been gained across all key stages and within both private and state sectors. My specialisms within this area include examination physical education, swimming, athletics, games and physical activity for health amongst others. Academic areas of interest include swimming development and performance, creating an innovative physical education curriculum, student leadership, character education and staff development.

Alongside university work I am a co-director of a Community Interest Company - GoFit4Fun. Primarily, the aim of this venture is to provide a platform for young people to co-create, innovate and take part in games targeted at physical activity and healthy lifestyle change. This is work in progress at the moment but watch this space!

The decision to leave a successful teaching career in secondary education was fuelled by a desire to broaden my own development within physical education, sport and health whilst maintaining a passion for teaching and learning. Having embarked on what I view as a 'second career', my aim is to pursue a research orientated direction as well as raise the profile of physical education, physical activity and health within a school curriculum context. I am at the start of this journey.

Outside of work I coach triathlon and love to indulge in a variety of sporting pursuits ranging from cycling to surfing!
