Summary
As Deputy Head of Department of the Natural & Built Environment I am responsible for leadership and management of academic development across a large and diverse Department which includes Geography, GIS, Environment, Planning, Architecture, Construction, Surveying and Real Estate subject areas. The Department delivers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, significant work-based bespoke courses for the construction industry, and Degree Apprenticeships. Courses are taught in partnership with Higher Education Institutions across the world, and particularly in China and Malaysia.
About
I joined Sheffield Hallam University in 2006 as a senior lecturer. Soon after I was appointed as principal lecturer to lead the Housing and Sustainable Communities academic staff group before becoming the Departmental UK Business Lead in 2013.
Prior to moving into academia, I spent the first part of my career working in local government in a variety of leadership roles including housing management, housing development, regeneration, community development, policy formulation and strategic planning.
Much of this work was conducted in a partnership setting involving private developers, housing associations, statutory service providers, the voluntary sector and local community representatives. I spent a year working in the voluntary sector in Sheffield before moving onto consultancy work where I conducted organisational reviews, in house training and impact assessments with a specific focus on equality and diversity.
As departmental lead for UK business development I worked with employers and professional bodies and with colleagues in the University to develop a strong business to business portfolio and apprenticeship programme.
I am particularly interested in activities within and outside of courses which enhance student employability.
