Dr Deepayan Bhowmik received his BE degree in electronics engineering from the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, India, in 2003, an MSc in electronics and information technology from Sheffield Hallam in 2006, and PhD from The University of Sheffield in 2011.
Previously he worked as a research associate at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh the University of Sheffield, and was a system engineer at ABB Ltd in India. He has been awarded a prestigious UK Engineering and Physical Science Research council (EPSRC) Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award for his PhD study and a Digital Catapult - EPSRC fellowship to conduct watermarking research. His research interests include multimedia forensics and security, computer vision, and low power embedded image processing hardware development.
Dr Deepayan Bhowmik joined the Department of Computing at Sheffield Hallam University in October 2016. His research expertise includes multimedia signal processing, digital media forensic and security, computer vision, machine learning and low-power real-time imaging hardware. He received his PhD from the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University of Sheffield in 2011. During his PhD, funded by BP-EPSRC through a prestigious Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award, he conducted fundamental research on multimedia security that resulted in major publications and a publicly available software framework.
After completing his PhD he joined the University of Sheffield as a research associate in a TSB-funded project that explored persistent tracking of metadata for entertainment content. From April 2013 until September 2016, he was at Heriot-Watt University as a research associate in the Rathlin project, looking at programmable embedded platforms for remote and compute intensive image processing applications (funded by EPSRC). He also lead the work package entitled ‘Novel computer vision algorithm development and deployment on FPGA-based low power imaging hardware’. Earlier, he worked as a systems engineering at ABB Ltd in India.
Dr Bhowmik received a Digital Catapult-EPSRC fellowship in 2016-2017 to conduct research on protecting entertainment contents and help Catapult projects, provide thought leadership, and drive the creation of new activities. Dr Bhowmik is active in working on recent multimedia coding standards and their applications for number years particularly on JPEG2000, H.264 and HEVC. He is a current member of British Standards Institution (BSI) IST/37 committee on coding of picture, audio, multimedia and hypermedia information.
He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious international journals (including the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing) and premier conferences in the signal processing domain such as the IEEE flagship Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP), European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO), IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) etc. He has contributed as a technical programme committee member for leading IEEE conferences and a reviewer for leading IEEE, ACM and Elsevier journals.
