Hugh Watson
Summary
I am currently the subject group leader for the Finance and Banking subject group and have been in this role since 2009. The role involves the direct line management of 12 full-time lecturers and includes recruiting new members of staff, managing the staff in my group and academic work planning. Previously I held the role of admissions officer/course leader for the accounting degrees between 1995 and 2009. This role involved vetting applications, giving talks to students and parents at open days and working in the clearing office in the summer. I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. My areas of specialism include Financial Management, Corporate Finance, International Financial Management and Mergers and Acquisitions but I have also taught Introductory Management Accounting, Microeconomics, Risk Management and Derivatives in the past. I've taught finance-related modules across all three undergraduate levels (Levels 4, 5 and 6), postgraduate level and on professional courses (ACCA and CIMA).
I have co-authored an internationally renowned key academic text book entitled "Corporate Finance: Principles and Practice" which has just gone in to its 7th edition. It has been adopted as a core text on a number of finance units at universities across the UK since it was first published in 1998 sold over 80,000 copies.
I have extensive experience of the learning and pastoral needs of UK and International students. I have been an external examiner for Staffordshire University (2010-14) at Gulf College in Oman and was previously external examiner for their British University Vietnam (Hanoi) collaboration looking after the quality and standards of their accounting and finance programme. Previously I was an external examiner for Financial Management and Corporate Finance in the Department of Accounting and Finance at Hertfordshire University (2003-7). Currently I am an accounting and finance subject external for Plymouth University at their partner Business College of Athens
Other valuable academic experiences include:
•membership of an external panel that oversaw the successful revalidation of the Accounting and Finance awards at University of West London, May 2015.
•a week-long department cultural awareness trip to China, May 2012.
•providing academic consultancy on course design and development for the finance degree at Dar-es-Salaam University, Tanzania, June 1998.
•involvement in financial training in Russia (Moscow) training accountancy lecturers in corporate finance on behalf of the British Council’s Know-how Fund, February 1996.
•a three month industrial secondment during the summer of 1994 in the treasury function of Rugby Group plc (three months).
I also have an excellent knowledge of BlackBoard, Word, PowerPoint and spreadsheet construction using Excel and the use of Microsoft Office e-mail.
Recently I completed 25 years of service at Sheffield Hallam University.
