Dr Helen Gibson

Researcher

Summary

I am a researcher within the Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime Research (CENTRIC). I am currently working on Unity, an EU H2020 funded, project on community policing. Prior to Unity, within CENTRIC, I also worked on the ATHENA project which is exploring how new media can improve communications during a crisis. My main research interests lie in data analysis and visualisation and I completed my PhD at Northumbria University in graph and network visualisation.

  • About

I am a researcher within the Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime Research (CENTRIC). I am currently working on Unity, an EU H2020 funded, project aiming to strengthen the connection between communities, citizens and the police through community policing. The project will run until April 2018, includes a number of partners from academia, industry and law enforcement from across Europe and will develop a number of best practices for community policing, communications technology to assist and improve community policing and a training programme to be delivered to law enforcement on how they can improve their implementation of community policing. Prior to Unity, within CENTRIC, I also worked on the ATHENA project which is exploring mobile applications and social media can improve communications between law enforcement agencies, first responders and citizens during a crisis or disaster situation. I also contribute to CENTRIC's research in areas such as open source intelligence which is an overarching theme in many of CENTRIC's projects.

My main research interests lie in data analysis and visualisation and I completed my PhD at Northumbria University in graph and network visualisation exploring how different properties of the information in a network can be used to create meaningful and useful layouts to improve the understanding of the relationships within the network. Before the PhD I also completed a Masters in Computing at Northumbria and BSc in Mathematics at Edinburgh University.
