John Rutherford

Senior Lecturer

Summary

Following 19 years in practice I wanted a new challenge which led me to apply for a Senior Health Authority post as deputy manager of the ODP School in Sheffield. As ODP education has developed from City and Guilds into a BSc in ODP I have been involved in the transfer of ODP education into University, the national development of the ODP curriculum and most importantly supporting the professionalization of the profession.

Now in the twilight of my career I feel I have more to offer in supporting the drive to improve perioperative patient care through effective management, leadership and most importantly education.

  • About

I qualified as an Operating Department Assistant (ODA) in 1978 gaining a City and Guilds 752 merit award. I specialised in Cardio thoracic surgery which was a regional specialty along with three other UK specialist centres. From there I went to work in Rotterdam Holland where I experienced my first role in team leadership specialising in Cardio Thoracic surgery and Burns. Addressing the challenges of working and living within a different culture has stood me in good stead throughout my career. On returning to the UK, following a period of working within an inspiring and challenging Department of Orthopaedics I was successful in gaining a senior post specialising in Anaesthetics. I developed many clinical skills though the most significant learning was in managing staff and services as well as teaching and assessment of student Operating Department Practitioners (ODP). At this point I gained my full range of assessor's awards and Teaching Certificate.
