Phase one of our long-term plan to transform our campus was approved by Sheffield City Council planners in October 2021, and is due to be completed in Autumn/Winter 2024.

Situated on the site of the former Science Park building, adjacent to Howard Street and leading up from Sheffield train station, the three new buildings are a gateway to Sheffield city centre.

Named after some of the city’s reservoirs that have an important role in its history, the buildings will provide a new home for many of our students and staff:

Strines - Institute of Technology (IOT) and general teaching

RedmiresCollege of Social Sciences and Arts

Langsett – Sheffield Business School

A new ‘University Green’ public space will provide a green heart for the campus. This will see new trees planted, more than 400 square meters of new greenery and spaces for up to 150 people to sit and relax.

In March 2022, we welcomed regional partners to campus the mark the start of construction work on the Howard Street development and in 2023 we celebrated the buildings reaching their highest point in a ‘topping out’ ceremony.

Other elements of our Campus Plan include work to renovate existing buildings such as the Owen Building Atrium. This has transformed this well-used central space into a contemporary, vibrant area that honours the pre-existing architecture and celebrates the Atrium as a campus hub for students and staff.

Image shows two students in the atrium, talking. One student is walking down the stairs. The atrium is bright and airy thanks to the new renovations.

Richard Calvert, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, leads the university’s civic strategy.

“These new facilities are designed to deliver significant benefits for our students, and to make Sheffield Hallam an even more attractive place to study and work, whilst also enhancing a key gateway to Sheffield city centre.”

Sustainability

A new ‘University Green’ public space will provide a green heart for the campus. This will see new trees planted, more than 400 square meters of new greenery and spaces for up to 150 people to sit and relax.

Designs include the latest technology and measures to make the new buildings zero carbon ready. They include the use of sustainable energy solutions such as heat pumps, maximising the use of photo voltaic panels and provisions to support and promote sustainable travel.

Hallam Alliance

The campus plans have been developed alongside several key partners as part of the collaborative ‘Hallam Alliance’. The first of its kind in the UK for a university building programme, the Alliance involves all design, construction and facilities management partners working collaboratively with the client through all stages of design, construction and operation.

Members of the Alliance include Sheffield Hallam University, BDP ARUP (Design), BAM (Construction) and CBRE (Facilities Management).
