Estates development and sustainability

Our vision is to provide a high quality, sustainable estate that supports the development of academic activities, enhances the student and staff experience and projects our academic identity.

We aim to:

  • deliver innovative space that can be used flexibly to meet the changing needs of the University
  • create a sustainable estate
  • develop a sense of 'place' and identity, using designs which reflect our vision and actively promote the University
  • utilise space in both an efficient and effective manner to support the delivery of the student experience
  • maintain effective engagement with the University community in designing and delivering strategic development plans.

We're constantly updating our facilities and have invested in our buildings over the last 10 years, creating vibrant, modern, flexible spaces that benefit all those studying at, working at or visiting Sheffield Hallam.

Our investments include:

  • a brand new £32 million building on Charles Street, in the city centre. Opened in 2016 and housing the Sheffield Institute of Education and provides state of the art student, staff and event space.
  • a new home for the Sheffield Institute of Arts in the iconic Old Post Office Building in Sheffield; a great place to celebrate our heritage as a flag-ship school of art and design.
  • the £27 million Heart of the Campus, at Collegiate Crescent, opened in autumn 2014, housing students and staff from law, politics, sociology and psychology courses, and providing informal learning and catering spaces for everyone on campus.
  • a 22-acre Sports Park, opened in 2013 following a £6 million redevelopment.
  • the creation of an examplar office building to demonstrate our capabilities for agile working in the Bryan Nicolson building
  • an £11 million refurbishment of our Sheaf and Eric Mensforth buildings which, from 2017, will provide the very best in learning and teaching spaces, alongside a striking new atrium for Engineering and Chemistry.

As well as these specific projects, our investment in long-term maintenance and extensive refurbishments of existing buildings means we keep a consistent level of quality across our estate.

Our commitment to sustainability

We're one of the best performers in the sector in terms of sustainability and have a suite of environmental policies, from sustainability to energy, waste management to fairtrade, which outline our key values, aims and objectives. In 2014–15:

  • we achieved our third consecutive year in the top 20 of the People and Planet University League with a rank of 15th, and our seventh First Class Award.
  • we were the recipients of a silver award in the Business in the Community Environment Index, which compares a wide variety of businesses according to their environmental credentials and achievements, not just Higher Education.
  • We remain one of the few organisations to have achieved continued certification to the 14001 and 50001 ISO standards.
  • Our Students' Union received the Green Impact Excellence Gold award following the successful establishment of the student-led green group, Sustain, which delivers sustainability projects across Sheffield Hallam.

Over the last ten years the University has reduced carbon emissions resulting from energy use in our buildings by 11.2% and reduced water consumption by 48.9%. The amount of waste being produced per Sheffield Hallam student has also fallen by 35.7% in the same period and recycling rates have increased from 10% to 27%.
