"I cannot wait to hopefully become a student here" - Reflecting on work experience at Hallam
The Widening Participation & Outreach team at Hallam, aims to create a small, targeted intervention, offering high-quality work experience opportunities to pupils who may otherwise not have the opportunity to access professional or degree-level work experience.
In June, the University welcomed seven Y10 students for two weeks of work experience. The participating students, from Dearne Academy in Rotherham, were hosted in a number of departments across the University.
The project aims to provide students with beneficial learning opportunities including; understanding a professional working environment, building soft skills and experiencing work-based training.
Here, some of the participating pupils reflect on their experience…
"I have loved my experience at Sheffield Hallam University as it has helped me develop my communication skills as well as opening my eyes to the large variation of job roles throughout the university."
"In the past two weeks I have worked with several members of the widening participation and outreach team and have gained a new, enjoyable experience with each person. Anyone in the future who picks SHU for their work experience will have an amazing time as the staff and students are all great people, who will strive to make you a welcomed member of their team."
"I have extremely enjoyed my time not only in the security room but throughout the university and I cannot wait to hopefully become a student here."
"For my placement here, I hoped to learn what life was like at university and this has given me experience in a job and what life in university is really like."
"My favourite experiences were when I met every one I would be working with, the tours around the campuses, so I would know where each campus was and its function, and when I learn new skills to use in my work."
