Alumni through the ages

For many Sheffield Hallam alumni, studying here was about more than gaining a qualification – it was a life-changing experience in other ways as well. Friendships, marriages, careers and memories have all been forged within these seven hills. To commemorate the inauguration of the class of 2016 into our alumni community, fellow graduates have shared their stories and memories to celebrate our long and proud history #WeAreHallam

“I loved Sheffield, I met some wonderful people; the salt of the earth type. I've kept in touch with some and 70 years on we're still good friends.”

“The first hands on the steel furnaces used to give you a shilling and a bottle of Tizer each shift and a cheese sandwich if you were lucky.”

  • Tom Scott

“I remember our physics lecturer chain-smoked Senior Service cigarettes during lectures and in the lab. Those were the days! No filter tips then.”

  • Steve White

“Looking back at my diaries from the time, I’m not sure how I got any work done as I seemed to be out every night watching bands at the Poly or Top Rank.”

“The course then didn't have a strict curriculum as such, so we were very much encouraged to create and explore whatever weird and wonderful ideas we came up with.”

  • Laura Thompson

“We went out for a walk through the city, through the Peace Gardens and the Winter Gardens. Chatting through my ideas whilst strolling was much better than sat down at a desk with a blank page.”

  • Samuel Boateng

“I met so many amazing people and had it not have been for the opportunities that Hallam offered me, I don't think I would have got to where I am in my career today.”

  • Kate Rutter

“It was tough and demanding and I loved every minute of it. Well, almost.”
