Ella

Ella is a first year media student. She moved into foster care in 2012 after a difficult situation at home put a strain on her mental health. The support Ella receives from Sheffield Hallam has meant that for the first time she feels a sense of self-worth.

"I've noticed such a difference in myself since I started at Hallam. I am more confident, talkative and happier in myself. There are still things going on in my life that are having a negative impact on my mental health, but these are gradually being eased by being able to finally have my own identity.

"To not have to worry about my living situation and the costs involved in studying has been so reassuring. Because my past has been so unstable, I'm always thinking about the future, that's why I've used the financial support I receive to start saving for when I leave University and go off into the world.

"At the moment I'm unsure what career I'd like to pursue, but I do know that I want to do something exciting where each day is different and I'm constantly learning. In the future I would like to travel and see the world without feeling held back by my past."
