Msc Real Estate, Class of 2012
Georgia Crapper graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Business Management in 2009 and an MSc in Real Estate in 2012. She currently works as a graduate surveyor for Knight Frank LLP in Sheffield.
'I returned to Sheffield Hallam in 2011 to complete a masters degree with the view to working within my father’s business, Patrick Crapper and Son in Sheffield. Sadly my father became extremely unwell in January 2013 and I found myself running his business alone. Following his death in May of the same year, I continued to manage his client portfolio and completed numerous commercial lettings until making the very difficult decision to close the practice in July. It was simply impossible to continue without the professional talent and guidance of my father and I desperately wanted to follow my dream of joining the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).'
What my job involves
'I was extremely lucky to be offered a training contract with Knight Frank LLP in August 2013 who have enrolled me on the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) programme and continue to offer me fantastic training. I'm now based in the agency department – a role which is very client-focused and one which I'm really enjoying. Through my APC training programme, I'm learning new skills in property valuation and landlord and tenant law. On a daily basis, I negotiate the terms of new leases and I thrive on exceeding the expectations of the clients I work for.'
'My career aspirations are currently to complete my APC training and become a member of the RICS. I'm determined to follow in the footsteps of my father and to continue working within an industry I am very passionate about. I try not to plan too far ahead, based on recent events, instead I live for today. But I know that without a doubt, I wish to continue within this industry for many years to come.
'On a personal note, I'm training to run the Sheffield Half Marathon in April 2014 to raise money for Weston Park Cancer Hospital who offered my dad such incredible care during his illness.'
How Sheffield Hallam helped me
'Without my degree from Sheffield Hallam, professionally, I would not be where I am today. My qualification has given me a vital educational grounding which has provided an essential foundation to my on-going professional experience. I also know that a good degree from this respected institution has been essential on my CV and has opened many doors for me.'
A word to the wise
'My advice to other students and graduates is never give up. Don’t allow a challenge which seems insurmountable to stop you from achieving your dreams. Life may not take you down the route you plan for or expect, but every problem faced happens for a reason and makes you the person you will eventually become.'
