Jessica is Sales and Marketing Coordinator for the Hanbury Manor Marriott hotel in Hertfordshire.

What happened after I graduated

'In September 2011 I joined the Marriott's 18-month graduate programme. For twelve months I was Marketing and PR Coordinator, marketing the six food and drink outlets in the Grosvenor House hotel.

'Later on the programme, I became a sales coordinator for the same hotel. Then in June 2013 I moved to my current role as sales and marketing coordinator for the Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel in Hertfordshire.'

What my job involves

'I'm the point of contact for clients. I also write and design for promotional and advertorial pieces, act as a spokesperson for the hotel on social media, and support media relations to bolster the company’s reputation.'

Future plans

'In the future I'd like to pursue a career in marketing – either within a hotel chain (Marriott) or a restaurant. My ideal job would be a food editor for a magazine such as Caterer or Good Food.'

'My studies gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities – those which I had the opportunity to hone at University. Group work was also very beneficial to me – learning how to deal with other people, how to manage and how to lead them has enabled me to lead where necessary in my current role.

'Marketing was not a big part of my degree – working in a hotel and learning the ropes as you go has been the most invaluable experience.'

A word to the wise

'Do everything you can to immerse yourself in your new role. Take on new projects, and go the extra mile whenever and wherever possible.

'Be sure to take on relevant projects where you will be able to show your skills and attributes. And spend time with people who will be able to help you in the future.'
