Msc International Business Management, Class of 2009
Nadya Quek graduated with an MSc in International Business Management in 2009. She now works as a Projects Director in the International division of Suttons Transport Group.
What happened after I graduated
'I worked for a Korean refractory business in Sheffield as a Logistics Controller right after graduation. After working there for a year, I was looking for something more challenging with room to grow and opportunities to further my career. So I applied to Suttons and joined them as a Graduate Management Trainee.'
What my job involves
'My role involves coordinating global project-related activities across the division in conjunction with regional teams. I work on numerous projects such as improving internal processes to achieve efficiency, cost savings and implementation, and acquisitions.
'The most challenging aspect of my work and one of the things that I enjoy the most is the frequency with which I’m able to work with different people from various countries or cultural backgrounds. I've been exposed to different management styles, business conducts, problem solving skills and team work, which is a great learning curve.'
How Sheffield Hallam helped me
'My experience in Sheffield Hallam not only prepared me for my career, but also life outside of my career. I gained skills that cannot be taught. Through interactions with fellow students, professors, thesis supervisors and other University staff, I learnt how to deal with people from different walks of life. Being able to communicate and connect with people in a multi-cultural business environment is very important.
'The business modules I took were insightful and sharpened and honed my skills in report writing, problem solving, leadership, presentation skills as well as working in teams. My part-time job as a student ambassador in the University also built my confidence in interacting with people as well as becoming more outspoken.'
A word to the wise
'My advice to other students and graduates is don’t be afraid of hard work, and a positive attitude will get you through to anything.'
