BSc (Honours) Event Management, Class of 2010
Paul Tomes graduated with a BSc in Event Management in 2010. He is currently the managing director of business start-up The Expo People, offering exhibition consultancy.
What happened after I graduated
'I was extremely lucky to go straight into employment following university, with only a five-day gap in between! I spent three years working for a company in the healthcare exhibitions sector before deciding to go it alone in April 2013.
'We currently work in lots of guises on or at exhibitions all over the globe, and have projects in the hospitality, food and steel sectors. We hope to grow the business into the highest grossing exhibition sales consultancy business in the UK.'
How Sheffield Hallam helped me
'I have no doubt that without the education I got at Sheffield Hallam, I would not have entered the exhibitions sector. I was also lucky enough to gain support from the Research and Innovation office to support the start-up of my business.'
A word to the wise
'If you have the slightest desire to start your own business, give it a go now. Not in two years' time – NOW!
'There is never a perfect time to start a business, but by giving it a go, you start to develop yourself as a person, which ultimately makes you more employable if it doesn’t work out. By doing it when you first leave university, you probably have very few financial ties and such like, so is now not a good time?'
