Our 2018 Honorary Doctorates
Monday 29 October 2018
Sir Michael is an iconic TV broadcaster, interviewer and presenter with a career spanning more than fifty years. He will receive his honorary doctorate on 16 November alongside students graduating from the University's College of Business, Technology and Engineering.
Upon Sir Michael's acceptance of the award, he said: “I am honoured and delighted to receive an honorary degree from a university with such a high reputation. I thank everyone concerned.”
Also accepting the honour this year will be documentary and film maker, Louis Theroux who has achieved cult-hero status in the UK, with programmes covering topics as diverse as drug addiction, wrestling, racism and Scientology. Theroux is thrilled to be offered the award and hopes it will be a chance to share his ideas with members of the college and student body.
Adding to the lineup are the creators behind of the hit musical, Everyone's Talking about Jamie. The musical was inspired by the 2011 BBC Three documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, which tells the story of a 16-year-old schoolboy living on a Sheffield council estate who harbors dreams of becoming a drag queen. The talented trio, Jonathan Butterell, Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae said in joint statement "our acceptance of the honour is a tribute to the incredible relationship between Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and the people of Sheffield themselves."
Leading music video director, and Sheffield Hallam alumnus, Dawn Shadforth has also been nominated to receive the award. Shadforth made her directing breakthrough with the Kylie Minogue video 'can't get you out of my head', later working with other big name artists such as Florence and the Machine and Primal Scream.
More recipients of honorary doctorates this year are:
- Sheffield's golfing hero and former Masters champion Danny Willett
- Renowned expert in policing and criminology, Professor Betsy Stanko OBE
- Sheffield's iconic artist, Pete McKee
Our honorary doctorates will receive their awards alongside our students during the 12 - 23 November graduations.
