Radio 1 producer returns to Sheffield Hallam
Tuesday 31 March 2015
Radio 1 Breakfast Show assistant producer and Sheffield Hallam graduate Fiona Hanlon returned to the University as an alumni speaker at the Pathways event in March.
As well as sharing stories of her day-to-day job, Fiona advised students on how to make the most of work experience opportunities.
Fiona graduated in 2006 with a degree in media studies. She was heavily involved in student radio throughout university and elected as the media executive for the Students' Union. Following graduation Fiona gained experience with local stations and XFM in Manchester before landing a role with Radio 1 six years ago.
She said: "Radio is an important medium and the more experience students can get the better.
"I'm passionate about student radio as it provided me with the confidence to pursue this career. It was definitely my learning ground and students should get involved with it as much as possible."
Fiona was one of a number of inspirational alumni guest speakers. Film producer and Warp Films CEO Mark Herbert provided the keynote speech, and Catherine Hufton of matchesfashion.co.uk was on the panel for several workshops.
The Pathways creative media industry day brought together successful alumni and businesses to discuss current trends and employment opportunities in public relations, journalism, film and media production, animation, visual effects, gaming and photography.
