Varsity 2019

Tuesday 30 April 2019

Many of you will remember Sheffield Varsity being the highlight of your student calendar. It is the biggest university sporting event in Sheffield - with over 15,000 spectators across 80 events making it the local derby to end all local derbies!

This year, there have been 32 sports on offer across Varsity, from equestrian and sailing to football, rugby and basketball. We have also seen the first ever female Futsal match, which was won by Sheffield Hallam, a new Women’s 2 Football fixture and Athletics relocating to the English Institute of Sport.

After a fantastic fortnight, Varsity drew to a close at the Sheffield Arena for our much-anticipated Ice Hockey final. It proved to be one of the most exhilarating matches of the season, with Team Hallam managing to edge the game in the final few minutes to become the champions of our closing event.

Although Team Hallam took the ice hockey final win, the University of Sheffield was successful in taking the trophy for the seventh consecutive year. The final score of 45.5 - 32.5 has put our rivals in a clear lead for the first time in ten years, with the University of Sheffield now holding 11 varsity trophies to Sheffield Hallam's 10 - there's always next time!

Varsity 2019 was a celebration of student sport in Sheffield, and our athletes, spectators and organisers definitely made this series one to remember.
